If You Believe America is a Christian Nation…

Stan Moody:

There is no evidence that Henry authored this statement. The statement actually comes from an article mentioning Henry’s Christian faith, published in the April 1956 issue of “The Virginian” magazine.

Contrary to the claims of the Facebook post, Henry was not a ratifier of the U.S. Constitution. He refused to attend the 1787 Constitutional Convention and strongly opposed the document’s ratification, believing that it insufficiently protected individual and states’ rights.[1]

ON THE OTHER HAND, if this MEME suits your extra-biblical religious preferences, you might also like the following satirical twists on our nation’s history:

  • Our early settlers secured warranty deeds to their homesteads from Native American peoples at fair market value…

  • ·         Jefferson’s edict, “Those who labor on the earth are the chosen of God”, equally included non- European occupants of the western territories later seized by the United States…

  • ·         The “Monroe Doctrine” of western expansionism invoked by Pres. Monroe in 1823 was a traveling course in EVANGELISM EXPLOSION

  • ·         The term, “MANIFEST DESTINY”, coined in 1845 after Texas was added to the Union, was a call to share the privileged destiny of white, European settlers with the less fortunate occupants of the territory…

  • ·         Evangelical prayer in schools is a call to holiness…

  • ·         African slaves were brought here as a mission of love to give them the opportunity for salvation, independence and economic success…

  • ·         The SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION is committed to equal rights for minorities and women…

  • ·         The right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” was ordained by God to provide everyone with equal opportunity to become wealthy enough to sustain the Christian Church in perpetuity at 10% of income…

  • ·         The Constitution of the US should be replaced by the Bible as selectively interpreted by the evangelical community…

  • ·         The “Antichrist” will be a registered Democrat…

  • ·         By virtue of His first miracle, Jesus turned water into unfermented grape juice to prove that Prohibition was divinely inspired…

  • ·         America was ordained by God as Christianity’s “City Upon a Hill”, a beacon of light to all banana republics and “false” religions…

Ode to Patrick Henry:

Patrick is buried on Red Hill, a museum in Brookneal, VA, where daily visitors are invited to reflect on the either/or mindset hamstringing us in our present age. Picking up on Gov. Winthrop's 1630 in-transit vision of America as God's (or maybe St. Augustine's) "City Upon a Hill", one can hope that the "hill" reaches beyond Brookneal, VA and bears at least a modest, albeit inherently flawed, measure of the Gospel of the Kingdom of God!
